ONLY one in 20 people think George Osborne is capable of sorting out Britain’s scandal-hit banks, a poll reveals today.

The findings are a fresh blow to the Chancellor, who will be fighting to restore his battered reputation at the Tory conference this week.

Just five per cent of those quizzed believe he is the man to revamp the banks in the wake of the furore over the rigging of interest rates and uproar over bankers’ bonuses.

Almost six out of 10 (58 per cent) say the Government will not succeed in changing the way banks are run, according to the poll carried out for consumer champions Which?

The findings come after we revealed Ed Miliband’s plan last week to break up the banks unless they clean up their act before the next general election in 2015.

In the wake of his promised crackdown, the Labour leader is the most trusted politician to sort out the banks. But Mr Miliband still manages to score only 15 per cent in the poll, just ahead of PM Mr Cameron on 14 per cent, with Lib Dem Business Secretary Vince Cable third with 13 per cent.

More than 80,000 people have already thrown their support behind the “Big Change” campaign led by Which? and pressure group 38 Degrees to force banks to put the interests of customers first.

Which? chief executive Peter Vicary-Smith said: “This public mistrust is a consequence of the way banks have been allowed to get away with one scandal after another without any individuals being properly held to account. We want to see big changes to make banks work for customers not bankers.”
