Highland MP John Thurso is to lead the Scotland panel for the Parliamentary Commission on Banking Standards, which was set up in the wake of the Libor rate-rigging scandal.
The session in Inverness, which will hear evidence on December 3 before heading to Edinburgh, will focus on the impact of the financial crisis in Scotland, and in particular rural areas.
The new probe could pave the way for measures to be included in new Westminster legislation to provide greater protection to businesses in remote parts of the country.
Lord Thurso said: “I am quite clear that the impact of the banking crisis is felt more keenly in remoter areas where the economy is more fragile.”
